EqOpTech promotes equal access to technology to bridge the digital and education divide by giving away computers in underserved communities while engaging students to refurbish, repair computers and teach STEM classes to benefit at-risk students.
EqOpTech fights for tech access amid COVID-19:
We are working hard to support our community during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. Although the shelter-in-place has changed how we operate, EqOpTech is still striving to make technology resources available and accessible.
EqOpTech has deployed over 350 Chromebooks to local schools - even more critical now that all schools have switched to online distance learning. Students can use these laptops to attend Zoom meetings, contact their teachers, and access various online resources.
Because of the shutdown, EqOpTech has had to halt most of its physical operations, including laptop deployment, in-person workshops or face-to-face meetups. However, we are coordinating with our interns and volunteers remotely. They can still work from home, collaborating on various projects via Slack, GSuite and e-mail. In times of crisis, we are always seeking students who would like to step up and give back to the community. For more information on our internship program, click here.
In addition to local schools, when the shelter in place order is lifted, several seniors have also received their computers as part of the Refurbished Computers for College-Bound Seniors program.
Many believe that there is a wealth of technology here in the Silicon Valley that is both available and accessible to everyone. But the reality is that many at-risk students do not have easy access to computers which are often necessary for education. Despite this, locally, there is an abundance of older computers that are outdated for some and eventually end up in landfills. We seek to reuse older technology for education enrichment so that underserved students will have an "equal opportunity" to learn important computer skills to excel academically.
